on a wintry Saturday morning...

... the Fool, Jamie and I headed into our LYS. Jamie was wearing the Dale of Norway sweater that the Fool finally finished for him, and a hat that was, maybe, the third or fourth thing I ever knit. It's shaped like a striped Russian onion dome with a little knot tied in the tail, and there's a wonky bit where I knit instead of purled, and the increases are not very well done at all.
Long story short, everyone in the yarn store oohed and aahed over the "cute hat" and totally overlooked the complicated color knitting in the Fool's sweater.
I said it was payback for all the times we were out knitting in a cafe or somewhere, and people fussed over his stockinette socks only to overlook the lace shawl I was making.

I understand exactly. I was at a party once and everyone was going on and on about the fake fur scarf one lady had made and completely ignoring the intricate lace shawl I was wearing. The Fool has my sympathies.

Did they realize the sweater was handknit?

I've worn lace shawls that people don't believe are handknit.
